They will call him Immanuel – God with us.

As we celebrate Christmas, we reflect on Immanuel as God with us. Jesus’ birth and death means we are gifted with God’s presence everywhere, for all time. Many of us remember happy childhood Christmases with friends and family. Yet so often for the men and women we support this is sadly not the case:

“Christmas was alright if I was in a good foster home. If not, it was just another day.”

What was your favourite Christmas present as a child?

A doll’s house, roller blades, a games console, fill in the blank. By contrast, one client recently told us: “I really can’t remember a gift from my childhood.”  The truth is, so many Langley clients have stories of broken families and difficult childhoods. It is well known that a lack of meaningful presence, love and support in early years increases the chances of a life of crime.

“I never really felt like I fitted in. My dad didn’t like me… I went to live with my nan when I was 12. I was drawn into gangs, I felt like I belonged there, and I soon fell into crime and drug use.”

Christmas was alright if I was in a good foster home. If not, it was just another day.

I really can’t remember a gift from my childhood.

Christmas Presence

At Langley we’re committed to being present for our clients, who have so often been rejected and cast out by people and institutions over the years. At Christmas, we seek to create a joyful, caring environment which, for some, might be their first. In each of our services this looks different, where budget allows it may involve presents, carols, meals, trips or an on-site Christmas dinner.

“I haven’t yet had a Christmas at Kadesh, but I know it’s going to be special. I can’t remember ever looking forward to Christmas like I am this year. I was in prison for a very long time… now I’m at home with people who care.”

Support us with a one-off or regular gift

We can’t all be present for our ~500 clients but here’s an example of what your money can support:

  • £6 per head – a stocking for a client or a gift for staff member working Christmas Day
  • £20 per head – a gift of something a client has requested
  • £25 per head – Christmas dinner in a service
  • £132 per service – one hour of chaplaincy presence each month for a year

Presence is not just for Christmas – commit to an ongoing gift:

  • £10, £20 or £50 per month

A regular gift can support our chaplaincy work, providing regular presence and spiritual nurture to each of our clients right through the year.

This Christmas will you support us to be present with our clients helping them leave their past behind and step into a hopeful future.

The first Christmas Jesus, Immanuel became God with us so that we can be there for those who need him most.

Christmas presence means being around people who can help me move forward. Somewhere I can be myself and not be judged for making mistakes. Looking forward rather than back.

Please note, clients’ names and faces are sometimes changed or obscured to protect those people in our care.

In the event that funds exceed specific needs of an appeal, we commit to using additional money for similar projects or on operating costs to help people with convictions transform their lives. Specific giving examples are often representative due to the diversity of our service provision across our services.
